



National Judges: Tom Brokaw
Tom Brokaw ![]() On December 1, 2004, one of the most trusted and respected figures in broadcast journalism, Tom Brokaw, stepped down after 21 years as the anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News.” Brokaw continues with NBC News as a special correspondent, reporting and producing long-form documentaries and providing expertise during breaking news events. In June 2005, Brokaw returned to prime time with an hour-long documentary, “Tom Brokaw Reports: The Long War,” about the war on terror. For the documentary, Brokaw traveled around the world – to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, France and Washington, D.C. – to interview world leaders, intelligence experts and those personally affected by the events of September 11. In July 2005, Brokaw followed with the documentary, “The Secret Man: The Story of Watergate’s Deep Throat,” and in September 2005, he reported on the religious revolution sweeping the country in “In God They Trust.” In December 2005, Brokaw received wide acclaim for “To War and Back,” a documentary about what happens when young men go to war, lose friends, get hurt and then come home. His 2006 report on race and poverty, “Separate and Unequal” received the 2007 RTNDA/Unity award. His numerous other honors include the Edward R. Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award and the Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement. He was inducted as a fellow into the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In addition, he has received the Records of Achievement Award from the Foundation for the National Archives and the Association of the U.S. Army honored him with their highest award, the George Catlett Marshall Medal, first ever to a journalist. West Point awarded him the Sylvanus Thayer award. Complementing his distinguished broadcast journalism career, Brokaw has written articles and commentary for several publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, Time, Sports Illustrated, Life and National Geographic. Brokaw has authored five best-selling books, “The Greatest Generation,” “The Greatest Generation Speaks,” “An Album of Memories,” “A Long Way from Home” and “BOOM! Voices of the Sixties.” |
