



Regional Judges: Naedine Hazell
Naedine Hazell ![]() Naedine Hazell’s responsibilities at The Hartford Courant cover all the feature and business reporting at the paper. Hazell worked at The (Bergen, NJ) Record before joining The Journal-News of Rockland-Westchester, NY, in 1983 as a staff writer and filled a variety of editing assignments for The Advocate of Stamford, CT, before moving to The Hartford Courant as city editor. There she continued a lifelong alternation between writing for editors and editing writers. Her special assignments for the paper have included both duties. She edited an 11-part narrative series on the hurricane of 1938 and was named co-editor of the year for front-page stories and several stand-alone sections on women. As editor of features, she supervises a staff of 32 who produce 12 sections a week, including the daily Life section, the weekly Calendar, Travel, Food and Sunday Arts sections. In 2006 she was named assistant managing editor of features and business and now supervises the business editor and his 10-member staff as well. Staff prizes won under her supervision include the Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting, Unity Award in Media, New England Associated Press Award for Features and two from the Newspaper Columnists Contest for humor. She is chairman of the Best Features Sections contest for the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors. Hazell was also a member of the Pulitzer Prize jury for feature writing in 2005 and the jury for editorial writing in 2006. Hazell attended Montclair State University, where she edited the school newspaper, The Montclarion and graduated magna cum laude. Hazell and her husband, photographer Stan Godlewski, have two children. |
