Regional Judges: Marie K. Shanahan
Marie K. Shanahan ![]() Marie K. Shanahan's zeal for the possibilities of interactive communication led her away from a career as a print newspaper reporter at The Hartford Courant to the digital side of news. She has spent the last 12 years as an online journalist - editing and producing news. In 2010, Shanahan joined Patch.com as a regional editor. She is currently responsible for hiring, development and management of a dozen local news websites in north central Connecticut. Prior to Patch.com, she served as deputy online editor of the Courant. That role involved improving and expanding the presentation of all facets of news content on the Courant's websites, as well as training the newsroom in best practices of online journalism and building audiences with social networking tools. Shanahan graduated with honors from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and history. She also holds a master's degree in Interactive Communications from Quinnipiac University. When Shanahan isn’t working, she is teaching digital newsgathering and storytelling techniques to journalism students at Quinnipiac. Her enthusiasm for mentoring young journalists motivated her to establish an online journalism internship program at The Courant for local college students. In addition, she served as a volunteer editor for many years with the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) student newspaper project. Shanahan’s work has been recognized by the New England Associated Press News Executives Association, Newspaper Association of America, Batten Awards for Innovations in Journalism and National Education Writers Association.
